WORKING HANDS: Charlie Staunton – Virgil Normal
Share
As a stationery brand, we are always curious how and what people use our stationery goods for. With this blog series, focusing on the hands at "work" and beyond, we ask five questions about the usage and meaning of the stationery tools to our friends in Los Angeles.
Our blog made it to the thirtieth post! We are so grateful for all the Working Hands friends and the readers : ) We would love to continue featuring our circle of LA stationery lovers.
For our special thirtieth post, we made a fun visit with Charlie Staunton at his shop, Virgil Normal. We love Virgil Normal and definitely look up to them!
The store is filled with so many of the original Virgil Normal tees (so hard and FUN to choose ) as well as the selected artists' and makers' apparel and accessories.

Q1. What do you do with the POSCA markers and MD notebook?
It’s a fun way to make signage for the store. They are usually hangtags that will hopefully draw attention to the item. Sometimes the images are inspired by their work, or photos on social media. I got the idea, from Mega Donki. They used to hand draw all the signage. Prices done as graffiti pieces, the store mascot Don Pen in many cool outfits and expressions. The store was full of drawings. An extreme overload of visual stimulus. I don’t have enough space in the store to go that crazy, so the hang tag idea works pretty well. I get to draw every day which makes me happy, and sometimes I find a good idea and is incorporated into a design.

Charlie showing us his POSCA collection.

Charlie's hand-drawin signages are everywhere in the shop and they
add such special vibes to the environment.

Our fave, a shrimp cocktail hangtag for Leeann Huang's stripe purse.

Q2. In our technology driven world, what does it mean to make things by your hand to you?
Well I grew up with analog technology. So if you wanted to be an artist or photographer you learned how to draw, and develop film and print your own work. I guess now, that is a luxury. I would assume that there is still an appreciation for hand made objects.

Charlie, Cody and James – Cody and James were stopping by the shop and then the casual drawing sesh happened with the POSCAs.
Q3. Pencils or Mechanical Pencils?
I am not one to draw hard lines in the sand. Much like surfing, if the waves call for a longboard ride a longboard. I like having my mechanical pencil handy and always sharp for sketching out an idea. But a trusty wood pencil comes in handy for shading and covering more page quickly. Not to mention the different hardnesses for ultimate saturation.

Q4. What’s in your pen stand?

Q5. What is your most favorite stationery?
The make everything perfect part is work. Not play. I like to play.

Can't see the grid details here, but Charlie is holding his favorite gridded MD Paper Pad in A5
